Neurology - Neurodegenerative Diseases

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias:
The research activity is aimed at characterizing, quantifying and studying the content of extracellular vesicles of neuronal and microglial origin from the plasma of patients with frailty and Alzheimer's disease and study of the microRNAs in them. In addition, the inflammatory profile in the serum of subjects with Fronto-Temporal Dementia and carriers of mutation in GRN and MAPT and expansion of C9ORF72 is studied, along with the profile of non-coding RNAs in the peripheral blood cells of the same patients. The "inflammaging" gene panel containing 56 genes correlated with aging and inflammatory processes is being studied in relation to intermediate-type expansions located in the C9ORF72 gene to determine possible risk factors in neurodegenerative diseases, as well as genetic variability in candidate genes in Alzheimer's disease and Frontotemporal Dementia. In addition, clinical trials for patients with these diseases are active.

Multiple Sclerosis:
Focus of research is the role of synaptically targeted miRNAs in myeloid-derived vesicles in Multiple Sclerosis and the study of inflammatory factors as possible markers of response to treatment. The research team is also involved in clinical trials for patients with Multiple Sclerosis.
