IL CUORE DELL’ANTICO OSPEDALE MAGGIORE DI MILANO.
I LUOGHI DELL’ARCHIVIO E LA CHIESA DELLA BEATA VERGINE ANNUNCIATA
(2011)

The religious and administrative center of the ancient Ospedale Maggiore, the Ca’ Granda, consisted of the parish church of the Annunciation and a sequence of halls and rooms used to host meetings of the “Chapter” that ruled the hospital and related activities. It is highly representative of the portion included in the expansion of Sforza building, implemented thanks to the generosity of Giovan Pietro Carcano in the early seventeenth century. The role of the new plant is evidenced by the involvement of Francesco Maria Richini and artists such as the Guercino, the Volpino and Lasagna. In these beautiful places in the centuries came to build a remarkable gallery of portraits and a valuable archive.
The one who was the center of decision-making and representation, of one of the most important institutions of the ancient Duchy, in the twentieth century found itself increasingly relegated to a marginal position: the transfer of welfare functions replaced after setting the University, the damages from World War II the same places, structures, their rich ornamentation and the priceless content.
The book traces the history of this portion of the Ospedale Maggiore, up to now neglected in the literature, describes the characteristics and current conditions, while summarizing the results, and questions remained open, a decade of studies and diagnostics. The intention in order to return to the collective memory of these two environments, and in order to provide an appraisal, and therefore conscious, inescapable for the basis for his reflections on their possible future.
