funerary monuments

A particular kind of artistic, directly connected to the Ospedale Maggiore, is represented by the
tombs of benefactors located mostly at the Monumental Cemetery in Milan. The hospital, in fact, besides
inheriting the property and manage the proceeds of the benefactors was sometimes also weighed maintenance,
and, in some cases, the completion of the burial. Today the institution is still responsible for the maintenance
of graves and, on the occasion of the anniversary of the November 2, placed floral tributes. The funerary monuments,
the complex family and columbarium niches often have a significant value for Lombard art, for example, between the
last quarter of the nineteenth century and the years between the two world wars, was found a core of true works of
art created by sculptors such as Paul Troubetzkoy, Labus Antonio, Giulio Branca, Achille Alberti, Giannino
Castiglioni, and architects such as Luca Beltrami, Augusto Alpago and Gio Ponti. It is also interesting for
the history of technology, the presence of old portraits in photoceramics. The importance of burial is given
then by their historical interest, because they allow to collect and verify data on various benefactors such as
social ties and kinship, biographical data, etc.
