GIO PONTI E IL GONFALONE DELL'OSPEDALE MAGGIORE DI MILANO (2011)

On 2 May 1927 the Hospital administration board decided to wear a sign at the funeral of the great benefactors and official ceremonies: the banner of Ospedale Maggiore di Milano, entrusting its completion in 1932, architect and artist from Milan Gio Ponti.
Gio Ponti designed and supervised the execution of the banner giving precious materials and techniques used. This is a complex task involving, for its execution, names of local important: the refined gold and silver embroidery on silk was made by Fratelli Bertarelli, while the metal parts were made by the goldsmith and jeweler Alfredo Ravasco who made a gift of all precious stones.
The sign, characterized by a peculiar solemnity of character and a strong symbolic value, was inaugurated March 24, 1935, during a solemn function in the Cathedral celebrated by Cardinal Ildefonso Schuster.
The artifact, significant for the art of the twentieth century, is one of the finest pieces of the collections of the hospital. The book reconstructs the history and will ensure to provide the reader an accurate technical information.
