The collection of medical instruments of the IRCCS Foundation represent an interesting and rare case of a collection developed within a hospital of ancient foundation, and it’s composed of over 2,000 pieces partially exposed at the headquarters of Via Francesco Sforza 28.
The earliest material are from the old Apothecary: 150 of ceramic vases to the seventeenth and eighteenth century, mortars and other bronze objects.
Particularly valuable is the section formed by obstetric-gynecological forceps, cranioclasti, pelvimetri and other instruments, which originates in the School of Midwifery, which was created in 1760 by Maria Theresa of Austria and passed, in 1905, under the supervision of the Istituti Clinici di Perfezionamento (Clinical Institutes of Specialization) to be later enlarged by Luigi Mangiagalli and Emilio Alfieri, where the section has recently increased by twentieth-century materials. At the outset is connected a museum full of anatomical and pathological preparations about 270 (pelvis spoiled, stunted skeletons, prepared teratology).
The activities of the Hospital is attested from surgical instruments, urology, neurosurgery, the anesthetic equipment, ophthalmic instruments and implants, by Röntgen tubes, glassware and instruments from the laboratory (balances, microscopes, ...), from the several testimony of functions Nursing and health care as well as seventy-five wax models documenting skin diseases.
The collections are constantly growing. The cooperation and help of doctors and staff is invaluable in locating and selecting materials, and in many cases leads to acquiring tools also collected personally or belonged to family members.
