"The belly of the Ca' Granda. The burial of the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan. 15th-17th Century"

The human remains of the burial of the Ospedale Maggiore offer an extraordinary field of investigation for the antiquity of the finds and consistency logistics: a rough estimate default currency at 500,000 the number of patients who died in the hospital and buried there between 1473 when the Ca’ Granda began his charitable activities, and in1695, when he officially closed the period of burial inside the hospital walls. Despite the periodic emptying of orders, the cemetery hospital, has never been completely evacuated. It extends for approx. 600 square meters under the floor of the crypt of the, chiesa dell’Annunciata.
The study of this unique biological archive may allow, on the one hand, to fill the serious loss of anatomical collections at the beginning of the twentieth century preserved in the Museum of Natural Sciences, and on the other hand, to contribute significantly to the advancement of anthropological studies, pathological genetic population of the ancient Duchy of Milan in the late Middle Ages and early Modern Age.

The promoters of the research are IRCCS Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, the Department of Human Morphology and Biomedical Sciences - University of Milan, Department of History - University of Milan, and the State Archives of Milan.

The first scientific results were presented at a Study Day held June 22, 2011, at the IRCCS Fondazione irccs Ca’ Granda, and which acts in press.
